Exemplars and Examples
The National Board provides examples and exeplars of written commentaries. As a candidate, BEFORE you begin composing your written commentary, it is essential that you spend time learning how an accomplished teacher writes.
Three types of writing done by accomplished teachers: descriptive, analyical (should be the bulk of your writing), and reflective.
Notice how specific the writing is. Keep your goals (think academic objectives to no more than three or you will write too much.) National Board is looking for a snap shot into your classroom.
The General Porfolio Instructions, p. 18-31, includes coded examples to demonstrate the three types of writing.
ATLAS – You should create a FREE account. You will gain access to four cases, certified videos and written commentaries that scored a 3.75 or higher!). These examples probably will not be your certificate area; that doesn’t matter. The purpose is for you to study and analyze the written commentaries to see how specific and analyatical an accomplished teacher writes.
An accomplishted teacher uses Knowledge of Students as they teach and plan. Look for examples of this in the exeplars and examples.
